Josh McDowell

We just had Josh McDowell come and speak at our church this last Sunday. He spoke on the topic of how we know what we believe is true about Christ and the scriptures. I don't have the space to go over everything he presented, but the key points were:

1) Faith should not be blind, and we ought to examine the evidence to see if what we hold true is based on reality and evidence.
2) If you examine the manuscriptural evidence of scripture (covered primarily the New Testament) to determine whether what we have written in front of us today is what was originally written you find that there is no book or records in history that come close to the level of verification the scriptures have. The earliest manuscript is 100 years removed from date, and over 25000 ancient copies are available to compare. The next closest book is Homers Iliad with 500 years separation and 600 copies.
To dismiss the accuracy of scriptures you must also dismiss the reliability of the writings of Plato, Aristotle, Caesar, Homer, and all other ancient authors.
3) You then have to examine the veracity of the text. He gave a number of evidences to this account, but the primary one he focused on was the eyewitness testimony (which is not perfect, but is the best evidence anyone can have to an event) of the disciples and how they were willing to die for their belief that Christ had been raised from the dead. Additionally he pointed out that they continued to give their account in the face of witnesses who were hostile and could have easily countered their accounts if they was not true.
